Miroslav Lajčák Talked with Federica Mogherini in Brussels

Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, held talks with Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in Brussels today (19 November 2018) before the Foreign Affairs Council. During their discussions they focused on Slovakia’s upcoming Chairmanship of the OSCE. Lajčák explained Slovakia’s priorities to the High Representative and outlined opportunities for a close cooperation of this organization with the EU, especially regarding projects aimed at improving the lives of people most affected by conflicts in the OSCE region. They agreed that such cooperation is much needed, and both parties will prepare a detailed framework for activities in this area. “The EU and OSCE agreed on a closer cooperation in June this year. Putting this agreement in practice is definitely in the interest of both organizations. We want to work out this cooperation in concrete joint activities,” stated Minister Lajčák.

EU 27 Foreign Affairs Ministers Discussed Draft Agreement between EU and London

Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, attended an extraordinary session of the General Affairs Council (GAC) in the EU27 format today (19 November 2018) under Article 50. The GAC today was summoned due to the need to discuss the wording of the agreement on the UK withdrawal from the EU by the British cabinet. The wording of the draft agreement on the withdrawal and the outline of the political declaration on future relations will then be on the agenda of the European Council (25 November 2018) at the level of the heads of state and governments, where its adoption will be discussed. The ministers agreed that the agreement is good, balanced and reflects interests of the EU 27. “The document reflects our interests and priorities, including the position of Slovak and European citizens in Great Britain, as well as the financial settlement by the United Kingdom after having left the EU,” stated Lajčák. The Minister also added that the resolution of the issue of the UK-Ireland border as negotiated is the best that is possible since it provides guarantees for fair relations in the future.

Minister Lajčák takes part in Talks with his Counterpart State Secretary Pompeo

Today (14 November 2018), Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic engaged in talks with his US counterpart Michael R. Pompeo, in Washington D.C. The ministers discussed a wide range of issues in the area of foreign policy and security which currently resonate not only in Europe but also in the American political milieu. They also agreed that the level and dynamics of bilateral cooperation have generated tangible results in the form of several joint projects and activities. Minister Lajčák informed his American partner about the state of fulfilment of the Wales NATO Summit commitments and described the current state of modernisation projects of the Slovak Armed Forces. “What connects us with the United States is a very close cooperation in increasing the quality and complementarity of the operational capability of the Slovak Armed Forces, and also the active engagement in the protection of the NATO Eastern flank”, the Head of the Slovak diplomacy concluded in this regard. Michael Pompeo highlighted Slovakia’s contribution to the international missions in Afghanistan and Iraq that focus on the fight against terrorism.
